Is it possible to use the Python API on a machine which is not the supervisor? I can't see any examples of how to set the hostname and credentials

The API works on any machine that can see the supervisor & has the API installed. In fact, the Qube GUI uses the API, as an example.
Can you give an example of what you're trying to accomplish?
